2006: Lauries Crusador xx Stallion of the Year

source: www.hannoveraner.com

Lauries Crusador xx
The nomination of the 15th "Hanoverian Stallion of the Year" was one of the highlights of this year's Stallion Licensing in Verden. It was the first time that a thoroughbred stallion was honoured with this award: Within the last years, Celle State Stud Stallion Lauries Crusador xx has certainly had a considerable influence on the Hanoverian breed. The Hell Stable in Klein Offenseth is the owner of the bay refiner. It was the first time that the prize was donated by the insurance company R + V / Vereinigte Tierversicherung. The company is one of the leading European horse insurance companies, and they are obviously about to increase their supporting activities in Verden.

Lauries Crusador xx by Welsh Pageant xx/High Top xx was born in Great Britain in 1985, and he started his career on the race track. With an impost of 90,5 kgs, he was accepted as a breeding stallion for the German warmblood breed. The well-known horse expert and stallion owner Maas J. Hell, who died some years ago, discovered the bay horse. He maintained good contact with State Stud Manager Dr. Burchard Bade, and in 1991, Lauries Crusador xx became an active breeding stallion for the Lower Saxonian National State Stud in Landesbrück.

He was frequently used by the breeders right from the very beginning. He had not only a considerable influence on the mare population in the Kehdingen area, but also on the whole Hanoverian breed. There are 1560 registered offspring, 349 mares registered into the Studbook, among them 103 state premium mares. He fathered 39 licensed sons, 13 of them being registered into the premium stallion register. 546 registered competition horses complete this impressive balance. With his successful offspring, the thoroughbred stallion Lauries Crusador xx is certainly about to create a new Hanoverian stallion line.

Le Bo counts among his most successful offspring in sport. In 2005, he ranked third at the German Dressage Championships for lady riders under Carola Koppelmann. The former Verden elite auction horse Lesotho and Ellen Schulten-Baumer belonged to the Olympic team in Athens. The stallion Louis Heslegard and Gerda Lehmann participated with the Danish Olympic team. At the World Equestrian Games in Aachen, Le Primeur competed with Marie-Line Wettstein for Switzerland.

The Lauries Crusador xx-son Londonderry (sire of resident Stallion Vollrath LESSING) created a sensation; he won his stallion licensing as well as the Federal Championships of four-year-old stallions in Warendorf. Apart from that, he also underlined his excellent pre-potency. Two of his sons entered the scene this year: Locksley II won the Federal Championships of four-year-old stallions, just like his sire, and at the 115th Verden Elite Auction, Londontime was sold at the incredible, sensational price of €510.000,00, a sum never achieved at a riding horse auction so far.

Which Stallion Should I Use?

The deputy breeding director of the Hanoverian Verband, Dr Ludwig Christmann takes a look at the stallions on offer, and comes up with the radical suggestion that perhaps we should be looking to certain jumping horses to breed our top dressage performers!

Chris Hector asked the questions

My first question was whether Weltmeyer was still the number one stallion in the Hanoverian team?

"Weltmeyer is one of those stallions that are born only rarely - Absatz, Bolero, Weltmeyer {all of whom are in Vollrath Worldwide PB's pedigree} - they leave their mark on the offspring, they are timeless. It is just not possible to reproduce such a stallion, you can try to breed them, but everything has to click and fit for it to happen. He is the number one stallion."

Looking at the mares at your big Ratje-Niebuhr show, Weltmeyer is still such an influence on the results...

"The reserve champion of the three year olds was a Weltmeyer, when you looked at the mares under saddle, there was so much Weltmeyer blood, directly as a sire or a grand sire."

The criticism of Weltmeyer is always that the horses won't collect, that there are 5000 offspring, where are they in Grand Prix?

"There are Weltmeyer offspring in Grand Prix. Weltmeyer definitely has his place in the breeding of dressage horses because of the active hind end he produces, and the regularity with which he produces that movement. It is also a question of how many Grand Prix riders we have."

Wie Weltmeyer - one Weltmeyer that is starring at Grand Prix

"I think if Weltmeyer has the right partners, then he produces Grand Prix horses."

What are the right partners for Weltmeyer?

"For most breeders the first aim is to produce sellable riding horses, not many are looking to produce a Grand Prix dressage horse, they want a talented riding horse with three good gaits and rideability. We find that Weltmeyer works well with mares with Thoroughbred blood, he has always worked well with Bolero, and he also seems to work well with Lauries Crusador. He himself is not a refining stallion and he is not a stallion to put longer legs on the offspring. Sometimes the walk could be better for the Weltmeyer offspring. So I would say long legged mares with a certainproportion of Thoroughbred blood."

What other stallion is going to play a major role in the next few years?

"Definitely Lauries Crusador xx and his sons. A Thoroughbred stallion like him who in the first generation produces Grand Prix horses, is very rare. Already there is Lesotho with Ellen Schulten-Baumer, and Le Beau in northern Germany with Mr Koch. Falk Rosenbauer has been very successful at Prix St Georges with Little Big Man."

Do you think Dr Bade even dared to hope that a Thoroughbred could produce such horses in the first generation? Or was he hoping that in the second generation his choice would prove itself?

"We don't expect this of a Thoroughbred stallion. Often it is the second cross, not the first cross, but we are lucky with Lauries Crusador who has produced good stallion sons like Longchamp and Londonderry, and they will play a big role."

Londonderry - set to play a big role

What are the qualities that Lauries Crusador brought to Hanoverian breeding? What is his stamp?

"He improves the frame of the horse. He puts on the long legs that we like, and the big shoulders that we hope from a Thoroughbred. What is also very important is the rideability of his offspring. They are very good in their mind, very co-operative, also good for collection. They have good movement and they are really trainable so the movement gets better under saddle."

Did he come straight from the racetrack to Celle?

"No, he came to Celle from England via Holland through the Dutch stallion owner, Henk Nijhoff and the legendary Maas Hell."

The bloodline of Vollrath Lessing and Worldwide P.B. featured very prominently at the 115th Elite-Auction on October 13 and 14, 2006.

Londontime by Londonderry / Walt Disney (breeder: Chr. Hellwege Tiedemann, Oberndorf; exhibitor: Bertrand Page, Emsburen) sold €510.000 a price record for riding horses in the Niedersachsenhalle.

The stallion went to buyers from Lower Saxony and he is going to stand at the State Stud Celle.

Londontime

Also very prominent was the bloodline of Kalista Field's stallion SALUTATION by Sandro Hit.

• Vollrath Bloodlines also scored 'gold' at the 2006 Bundeschampionat in Warendorf:

  • Riding horses, 4-years old, stallions:
    • Gold
      Locksley II (VA) by Londonderry/Weltmeyer
      breeder: Andrea Eilfort-Böcker, Ankum

Hi breeder friends

We thought you should know about the changes we are going to make over the near future.

Recently I had my 63rd birthday! Some deliberation about our future has happened with this result:

Jutta and I have decided to 'down-size' our operation. We will put the 20 acres at Kai Iwi as a Lifestyle block on the market and sell our mares (bar the young WW ones) in foal and may be the odd one with foal at foot.

Prices will be reasonable as we want to recruit breeders for Lessing ...... and due to Worldwide's age of 12 now and us having bred our replacement, we have him on the market also as he needs a broader mare base.

Preferably to go to Aussie or USA - we will see.

So the whole idea is to breed 2 or 3 foals per year and bring them on to age 3 or 4 and have 2 going horses in future to sell each year.

This way it keeps me and Jutta in not too much work and not having two places 15 km apart makes it a lot easier and more economical.

Kind regards!

Berny & Jutta

Equestrian Success for Wanganui - again! With great pride Vollrath Stud announces winning the National Dressage Championship - Novice at Taupo's National Equestrian Centre.

  • Horse: 7yr old, black, Hanoverian Gelding, Vollrath Dornkaat (Dynamit/Distelfink)
  • Breeder: Berny Maubach
  • Rider: Jutta Rosenblatt
Jutta and Dornkaat not only won the Finals of the Matthew's Hanoverian Novice Challenge with a score of 72.35 %, qualifying for the Finals and with only four starts achieving a 3rd placing in the Accumulator, but also on 04.03.06 the National Novice Dressage Champion title against a field of 32 nationwide competitors.

This is Jutta's second National Title, having won the same title in 2000 on Vollrath resident stallion Worldwide P.B. (imp. Germany); in 2002 the pair won the Medium HoY title. Jutta competed the Stallion successfully at Prix St George Level in 2005. Worldwide will not be competed in the future - he will have to concentrate fully on his Stud duties.

Berny and Jutta are looking forward to bringing on their new three-year-old black Hanoverian Stallion Lessing (imp Germany) and one of Worldwide's progeny, four-year-old black gelding Winnetou, who shows by all accounts a huge talent for the dressage arena.

January 30, 2006

We at Vollrath are all very pleased with horse and rider - young Dornkaat under Jutta was crowned Taranaki Novice Dressage Champion 2006.
